The Merry Month of May
Its been one hectic month for Black Label Vintage! We opened our new sister store, Red Label Vintage on Etsy.com and you can shop to your hearts' content by clicking here. In our travels, we met the incomparable Vera, a fiesty grand dame that told us some funny and rather racy stories of her youth, including the hilarious story behind her 1950s lacy red playsuit which made me laugh hysterically; the woman has a talent for story telling. We also met the beautiful Audrey who shared wonderful stories and a quit a few stunning dresses from her youth. She married young, loved hard, lost harder and found love again and is the more wise and strong for her life story. Her wedding dress will be featured in early June; a fantastic full circle skirted baby blue masterpiece. I absolutely love what I do because of these people and many others like them; there is history behind each item and it is impossible not to get a little attached to each piece especially when you have the honor of sitting down and talking to the owner of a particular piece. There are times when a person sees a woman or man wearing vintage and assumes they are frivilously playing dress up and discount what it means to that person. Forgive me, but when most of the world is covered in Old Navy and Hollister, you often don't know anything special about the person. Ah, now look at a vintage girl. She may be decked out in a smart cut 1940s suit with matching fedora and you actually crave to know her, or where she's going and where did she find this amazing ensemble? THAT is vintage; its daring to be different, to be original and stand out. Vintage clothing was often made with a particular woman in mind. Even factory produced clothing was produced with a sense of pride; you won't find that kind of construction in clothing today unless you are paying a hefty price tag to match it. I love vintage because there is absolutely nothing typical about it and it describes ME and my love of all things historical. What does your vintage say about you? I would love to hear from you!
